Manmohan, Amrit, Bush and Jessica !

President Bush is likely to cause a rift in the family of the Indian Prime Minister. Manmohan is welcoming Bush (though the level of security is eye-popping) to India while Manmohan’s daughter, Amrit, an attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union, is attacking the Bush administration for failing to book any high U.S. officials despite mounting evidence regarding the abuse of prisoners in many places.

Of course, these are matters of disputes in high places. Whether right or wrong the powerful ones get away scot-free. Always. At least,- almost always.

The story is the same in all places, - India as well as the US.

That’s why in India we find that nobody saw when Jessica Lal was shot and killed with many people around seven years ago.

The verdict is such that no one murdered Jessica,- although she died and the police found the high profile main accused pretty early in the case.

Finally, the main accused with connections in high places was found not guilty !

Just like no high officials of the US of A were found guilty in the ghastly treatment of the prisoners at Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo Bay !

Liger !

A liger is a cross between a male lion and a female tiger in contrast to a tigon which is a cross between a male tiger and a female lion. Both of these are not to be found abundantly in nature,- not because they are the special targets of poachers but because generally a tiger and and a lion are not the best of friends . That is the first dificulty of getting ligers and tigons in numbers !

Ligers are basically manmade like some of the isotopes, which don't occur in nature, but exist only because there are people who want to produce them,- for whatever reasons. A few pictures of a three-year old liger are posted. This one is ten feet in length at the moment and growing. It runs at fifty miles per hour and is fond of swimming also,- unheard of among water-fearing lions. On a typical day it eats about 20 lb of meat,- consisting mainly of beef and chicken provided by its loving caretaker. But on special occasions it could go on to devour about 100 lb at a single sitting ! The above pictures and information are sent by a friend of mine.

Republic Day ! - A Holiday on a Thursday !

Twenty-sixth January is the Republic Day of India.

It is a national holiday. Schools, colleges and offices are closed on that day. That's why people are so disappointed when Jan 26 falls on a Sunday. This year it is nice,- today is republic Day ,- a Thursday, a Holiday !

Several rituals are gone through on that day. The President and the Prime Minister of the country takes salute in the capital, Delhi, and the Governors take the salute at the respective state capitals. And there are speeches which are almost a rerun of any of the previous years.

In the repetitive actions the substance disappears keeping the form as residue.

Is India changing for the better? We know globalisation, liberalisation etc has made many goods available inside the country. What about the services, specially services expected from the bureaucracy ? What does the ordinary Indian say ? Here is the happy story of getting a passport narrated by an Indian citizen. This happened close to the Republic Day !

Business Education, Business in Education & Govt.

This is a snapshot of the debate going on regarding premier government established business schools going abroad to provide business education and earn money in the process.

In July 2005 there was news that at least two IIMs (Ahmedabad and Bangalore) are getting ready to set up business-schools in Singapore and Egypt. There was not much of newspaper news for quite sometime. In the current thinking of the goverment regarding globalisation and liberalisation one would have thought that these pursuits would have the government's support.

But No.

In Jan 2006 there was the news that Ministry of HRD, Govt of India, has said no to IIM-B's proposal of opening a school at Singapore. This generated a controversy.

The CEOs of the corporate world supported IIM-B's plan to open a centre at Singapore. Mr Narayanmurthy of Infosys talked about unshackeling higher education from the Government bureaucracy. Mr Mukesh Ambani, the elder son of the late Dhirubhai Ambani of Reliance Industries, and the present chairman of the Board of Governors of IIM-B, said that government should allow Institutes to go global.

In such a situation the Ministry of Human Resource Development(HRD), Government of India(GOI), blew hot and cold. So much so, that in the fog many believed that the government has given a go-ahead to institutes going global. Otherwise, why would major players in the business of education welcome the government in such a manner ?

To clear the matter the Minister of HRD, GOI, called for a meeting with the directors of all IIMs on Feb 1, 2006.

Meanwhile, what are the IIMs doing ?

IIM-B is toying with an option to open a branch at Hyderabad as well as increasing the annual intake of students from the present 240 to 300. This will go some way in countering the Ministry's objection to IIM-B's Singapore plan in that meeting huge domestic demand was not getting sufficient priority over expansion overseas. At the same time IIM-B is gearing to take on the HRD ministry's direction that before going global the IIMs should change the Memorandum of Association (MOA) between an IIM and the Government. Interestingly, in the IIM-B board meeting, which approved the changing of the MOA, Mr Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of the IIM-B Board, who said a few days earlier that the government should allow Institutes to go global, was conspicuous by his absence. Some blow hot and cold and some act them out.

IIM-A in the process seems to have given a go by for the moment to its overseas venture.

Another Law of Conservation !

We have studied in school many laws of conservation, such as conservation of matter, energy and so on. I think the law is more universal in its working and has application in political and social sciences also.

Consider the following: The last decade of the twentieth century saw country after country in Europe and Asia turning away from Left and going towards Right. However, in the beginning of the twenty-first century there is a visible swing towards left in country after country in Latin America, such as Venezuela, Brazil, Bolivia and most recently Chile.

One may term this phenomenon the conservation of Left and Right in the world. I think in this way society seeks balance. Too much of Right is as intolerable as too much of Left. Just imagine if we had two right hands or two left legs ! Not only would it be inelegant but it would also be inefficient and certainly unbalanced !

Let neither Left nor Right become an endangered species !

It is easy to criticize by saying that the refusal to accept the Sahitya Academy award will bring her more publicity than its acceptance. Those who harbour such book-keeping arguments, unfortunately, seldom get awards, almost never refuse any and usually lobby for them. It is not often that we see prestigious awards being refused based on conviction.
